"When I transferred to St. Charles School for my eighth grade year, it was in the hopes that I would get more out of my school experience. This has happened and more. Right away, from my first day at St. Charles...."

CEC Receives Funding for Music Instruction from Montgomery County
For the second consecutive year, CEC has received a grant from the Montgomery County Arts & Cultural District. The award of $6,900 in Decmeber 2010, will assist in stabilizing instrumental music instruction and performance opportunities for children in Dayton's urban neighborhoods who attend 3 Catholic elementary schools (Holy Angels, Mother Maria Anna Brunner, and St. Anthony.)
Chaminade Julienne High School recently surveyed urban elementary band parents regarding their satisfaction with last year’s (?)program. The overwhelming majority were pleased with their child's band experience. Even with that strong response, many of them indicated that they struggle with the costs of lessons and/or instrument rental. Forty percent (40%) of those responding were single-parent families, earning less than $30,000 annually. Several had more than one child in the program. MCACD funding has allowed instructors to focus on teaching music, rather than collecting fees. By assigning the collection of fees to the CJHS Music Director, we have not only removed a potential barrier to sustaining a strong teacher/student relationship, but have improved the efficiency of fee collection. While this may seem like a small thing, the fees collected from parents cover progarm expenses not covered by MCACD. MCACD funds assure that any student who wishes to participate in instrumental instruction can do so, regardless of the family’s ability to pay the established fees.
Experience shows that students who enjoy positive musical experiences through the 8th grade, generally continue to participate in those same opportunities throughout high school and beyond. CEC also has partnerships with Alter and Carroll High Schools, who operate satellite elementary music programs similar to that of CJHS. It is our desire to replicate the MCACD model with the other high schools by leveraging its success to involve additional funding entities.
Project Goals:
1) To provide high quality instrumental music experiences to every 5th - 8th grade student who wishes to participate
2) To assist parents and school staff in achieving optimal cognitive and social development for each student
3) To encourage graduating 8th graders to continue to participate in, and expand, their music experiences throughout their high school careers.
4) To encourage students to develop a life-long appreciation for music
5) To develop a service delivery model that can be replicated with the other Catholic high schools in Montgomery County
